Academics Overview
CHOICE OF PROGRAMS
Westhill Institute's Middle and High School provides a rigorous international program of study in a multi-cultural environment designed to prepare students for successful university study anywhere in the world. Two programs are offered and students may select either depending upon their choice of university.
International Program
Is for students who plan to study in Mexico, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or Asian countries. All subjects are taught in English with the exception of Spanish literature. The required courses for the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) are offered in English as well and these are the courses that entitle students to have admission to any university in the Republic of Mexico.
Likewise, students who choose to study in our International Program are fully prepared and authorized by the Universidad Autónoma de México to attend the Mexican university of their choice, provided they meet the entrance requirements.
Similarly, Westhill's program for the Secretaría de Educación Publica (S.E.P.) is fully accredited and provides students with needed knowledge and skills related to Mexican history, cultural, and creative approaches to learning. Courses in grades 6 to 9 include Orientación (Personal & Social Development), Historia de México (History of Mexico), Formación Civica y Etica (Civics and Ethics), Geografía de México (Geography of Mexico), and Aprender a Aprender (Learning to Learn).
US program
Is designed of students who plan to study in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom or Asian countries, but not in Mexico. In this program as well, all subjects are taught in English and there are no locally required courses that would permit the student to study at a Mexican university.
IB candidate school
With the advent of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years and Diploma Programs in grades 6 to 12, Westhill students will have an even greater advantage for university admissions and a higher level of university preparedness. With the acquisition of the International Baccalaureate diploma at the end of grade 12, Westhill graduates may qualify for advanced placement up to a maximum of one full year at more than 800 colleges and universities around the world. Because of the international and multi-cultural qualities of the Westhill student population, the International Baccalaureate programs provide an innovative and powerful opportunity for globalized education.
SACS / AdvancED
Because Westhill Institute is regionally accredited in the United States by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS / AdvancED), students who graduate from our school have the same status for university admissions as students who graduate from high schools physically located in the United States. No re-certification of documents is required and Westhill's program of study is recognized as a valid and challenging university preparatory curriculum.
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
In addition to the academic course of study, students participate in an interscholastic sports program in soccer, swimming, basketball, and volleyball. Because Westhill is a member of the Association of American Schools of Mexico (ASOMEX), Middle and High School students compete with students from other American schools in these same sports. Westhill CARES is our community service and action program in which many students voluntarily participate and serve two orphanages, and seniors home, and two animals shelters. Westhill students participate in Destination Imagination, ASOMEX Debate, a variety of international competitions related to debate, an ASOMEX mathematics competition known as Math Counts, and an ASOMEX Art Fair.
