Pre-school program
Westhill Institute's Pre-School and Kinder program is based on one of the most inventive and groundbreaking academic programs available anywhere in the world.
Kindergarten Learning Experiences from the Massachusetts Department of Education has been used at Westhill for the past two years, with great success. This program establishes academic content, learning standards, creative assessment activities, and a multitude of resources for kindergarten students and teachers. As an integral part of the overall academic curriculum for our students, Kindergarten Learning Experiences makes it possible for children in this age group to be better prepared for the challenging class work and learning activities of the elementary level classroom.
Westhill is also proud to announce that beginning in school year 2011 – 2012, the International Baccalaureate Early Childhood Program will be integrated with the Massachusetts Kindergarten Learning Experiences curriculum at all of Westhill's Pre-School and Kinder campuses. Based on the natural inquisitiveness of children, the IB Early Childhood Program will initiate our students into the skills and content necessary to become successful lifelong learners. The International Baccalaureate Early Childhood Program brings Westhill into an elite category of international schools, which are focused on the latest and most successful learning strategies and methodologies. But of course, effective education is not limited to the classroom. Physical activities are a very important dimension of school life for children. Here is a brief description of some of the inventive skills development techniques used by Westhill teachers.
transition
For Transition level students, the school day begins with a morning circle
in which teachers
encourage children to imitate various types of movements.
Additional examples of activities include popping bubbles to develop fine motor skills or a quick game of basketball to encourage gross motor skills. Kitchen activities, as well as explanations of numbers and shapes, are also used to stimulate logical thinking.
Pre-school
Children enter the Pre-School section based on their chronological age as of September 1. Children who are two years old before September 1 participate in Pre-School 1 classes. Children who are three years old as of September 1 are assigned to the Pre-School 2 level.
pre-school I
In Pre-School 1, great emphasis is placed on the social-emotional development of the child.
The skills of sharing, waiting one's turn, and learning to adjust to group membership are learning activities that accompany the academic curriculum described in the first section. Discovering how to be a learner in a school setting is an important part of the continuous maturation process for early childhood education. Another important facet of education at the Pre-School 1 level is language development. While the language of instruction is English, children show their understanding and respond initially in their native language, usually Spanish. The use of school tools such as scissors, crayons, and brushes to develop motor skills form another area targeted for refinement at this level.
pre-school II
At the Pre-School 2 level, children continue their work with language development,
acquiring a large repertoire of songs, finger plays, and rhymes.
Westhill Pre-School 2 students are exposed to the written word daily as they share exciting and engaging stories, experience the beauty language and creative expression, and begin to recognize a variety of words in written form. Math activities include exercises such as counting how many boys are in the group or how many girls are wearing bows in their hair. Children begin to work with geometric figures and they practice making and interpreting many different geometric patterns. Science and social studies provide interesting topics for study and these are integrated into language and math work. Additional classes include music, French, art, and computer skills in both the Pre-School 1 and 2 programs.
